Health services library

Everyone who works for University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust can join the health services library at Southampton General Hospital. If you're employed by another NHS organisation but based at SGH you are also entitled to become a member of the health services library. The library is here to support the work, learning and research activities of all Trust staff.

Membership provides you with access to:

  • books and journals
  • DVDs and CD-ROMs
  • fiction collection
  • computers with web access
  • photocopying facilities
  • training and support in finding and using information
  • space to study or work
  • help to access and use NICE Evidence

You can pick up a registration form at the library. We'll need to see two pieces of ID when you join. One should prove you're employed by UHS or another NHS organisation (your contract or payslip); the other should have your current address on it (utility bill or driving licence).

You will find our opening hours and contact details on the health services library website. You can also search our library catalogue online by following the link to WebCat.

Health services library lighting project - July to September 2017

On Monday, 24 July the final part of the project to renew the ceiling and install new lights in the health services library will begin.

This project will run until late September. These works require half of the library to be closed off. The library will continue to operate standard opening hours and all loans and enquiry services will operate as normal.

The most-used books in our collection have been relocated and will remain accessible. The stock which remains in the closed area will not be accessible during the summer. The inter-library loans service is available for books and journal articles as well as for the items located in the closed area.

Study spaces and computers will be available in the library throughout the project. Group study rooms and training room 3 will be closed. We anticipate some noise disruption, please accept our apologies for this. Our contractors aim to minimise disruption and we thank you for your patience during the works.

Please ask library staff if you need additional information.

Staff working for other local NHS organisations

If you work for another local NHS organisation, you will find details of your nearest NHS library from the Hampshire healthcare libraries website.

Electronic resources for NHS staff

NHS staff have access to a wide range of electronic resources. This includes:

  • bibliographic databases (including Medline and CINAHL)
  • full-text e-journals
  • a collection of e-books

NICE Evidence

Some areas of the NICE Evidence site are freely available. However, to get full access to resources such as databases, e-journals and e-books you will need to have an NHS OpenAthens username and password.

If you have not already registered for NHS OpenAthens, just follow the link. The process only takes a few minutes if you use an NHS computer.

UHS staff now have access to DynaMed Plus.

This is a 'point of care' information tool that gives clinical staff immediate access to evidence based information about conditions and interventions via a website and mobile app. To use the app, UHS staff need to log into the website with their OpenAthens account and then sign up for remote access.

Access to Trip Pro until the end of 2017 for NHS staff working in England

Access is via IP address. When logging in to Trip Pro on an NHS computer, you should see the message “Your PRO account provided by Health Education England”. Username and password access is also possible for off-site access but you need to be connected to an NHS computer to set up this form of access.

You will find more details about us on the health services library website or by downloading the Library NHS Staff Guide on this page.
