Clinical attachments

Honorary clinical attachment or observer contracts are designed to provide a sample of the NHS experience to visiting doctors from overseas. This is an observer role only. The visitor will not have direct patient contact or take on any responsibility.

New home office regulations recommend a six week limit on the duration of each attachment with a maximum of six months. We currently limit attachments to six weeks.

Under no circumstances will the doctor undertake on call duties to cover for sickness, or be granted a request for an Honorary ST1/2 contract. Please refer to the relevant policies on the Trust's intranet, staffnet.

Applications

Applications can only be made using the three forms in the downloads window and returning them by email to gillian.mckay@uhs.nhs.uk|

All applicants must state the area of specialty they would prefer, although we can make no guarantee of availability of a place in any chosen specialty.

All applicants must provide contact details for two referees (email/address).

If accepted the applicant will be notified with a start date and a named educational supervisor.

All attachments will start on the first Wednesday of a month to coincide with doctors' induction.

The granting of an attachment will be dependent on:

  • Successful completion of a Criminal Record Disclosure form or similar endorsement, plus sundry other documents relating to proof of identity
  • An occupational health check
  • Attendance at the doctors' induction day before the attachment commences. These are on the first Wednesday of each month.  Successful applicants will also have to undertake an online induction. Further details of this will be sent once an offer is made.
  • Satisfactory references
  • An ID badge must be worn at all times. This will be provided at induction.

Payment

The total fee payable is £500. £100 will be payable initially with the application form, the balance being due upon approval of a placement.

Please note we receive many applications. Payment of the initial fee of £100 will not guarantee that we can find you a place, although we will obviously do our best to accommodate suitable applicants. If you are successful we will then ask for the balance of £400 to be paid so that we can instruct medical HR.

Accommodation

The hospital has no accommodation for visiting doctors. Candidates are responsible for arranging their own accommodation. We have a list of local guest houses available.

Timescales

Please apply at least two to three months before you wish to start. It may take four weeks to source a placement. Applicants may be called in for interview. If successful there will be a further waiting period of a minimum of six weeks for pre-contract checks. We are not able to take any applications to start in August. These timescales are not negotiable.

Successful applicants will be expected to make their own arrangements to comply with the start date.

If applicants wish to visit medical HR then this must be by appointment only All other contact must be by email only.
