Did you know that the thing that stresses foundation doctors out the most at UHS is printers and IT systems? This was revealed during every one of the Safemed stress management and resilience workshops we have been running for the foundation year 1 doctors since October 2013.
We have run six of these half day sessions which are based on a programme designed and run at University Hospital Cork by Professor Margaret O’Rourke, professor of forensic psychology.
The programme, which has its basis very much in recognising the impact of doctor stress on patient safety, sets out to recognise stressors and provide some tools for managing your own stress. It has a handy reminder method to help participants remember to check our their stress in five key areas of their life and work.
The workshop is being evaluated by the University of Winchester and we hope, in due course, to roll it out for junior doctors in specialty training and to work with the University and deanery to make sure that resilience training is integrated into both undergraduate and postgraduate curricula in our region.
