Information for patients travelling to and from Jersey

Most patients who come to Southampton will not have return tickets due to the uncertainty of a discharge date. A Liaison Sister will book these for you via the travel office which is situated in Jersey General Hospital.

If you have not been sent to Southampton for treatment (i.e you have been on holiday in the UK), the Channel Island Health Authorities will not pay for your treatment/travel costs (as from April 1st 2009).

Jersey States fund travel for the majority of patients who come to Southampton to treatment but there is a ceiling of income and if your income is above this, you may be responsible for your own travel.

Please note - Jersey States will pay for your care - there is no ceiling applied to treatment costs but only if the Health Authority has sent you to Southampton for treatment/consultation - unless you have private insurance. Therefore, it is important to know who funded your travel.

If you are over 75 years of age, Jersey States will fund a relative/friend to accompany you.

One parent/guardian of a child (under the age of 18) will be funded for travel by Jersey Sates.

If a relative/friend has accompanied you on a Charter Flight (Air Ambulance) to Southampton, Jersey States will fund that person's return travel to Jersey.

If you have been admitted to Southampton by Charter Flight and you are returning by a schedule flight but you have no I.D. (This is a requirement of  the Airlines), a letter giving you the authority to travel can be used for one journey only.

If you need to take medication on the flight, it is advisable that you have a letter from the doctor in charge of your care explaining this, but please ensure this is written on UHS headed notepaper.

If you are given clip removers, S/C Heparin etc to take back to Jersey with you, don't forget to put the item(s) in your hold luggage and not your hand luggage because of the security checks at airports.
