The Emergency Department at Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust now sees more than 92,000 new patients a year (of which approximately a quarter are paediatric).
We aim to give all patients outstanding medical care as efficiently as possible in a clean and safe environment. Our multi-professional team is particularly skilled in the management of undifferentiated presentations and also has high levels of skill in the resuscitation of critically ill and critically injured.
There is a consultant on the shop floor from 8am to midnight Monday to Friday and from 12 noon to midnight on Saturdays and Sundays (and on call thereafter). There is 24 hour middle grade and nurse practitioner cover and the clinician of the day or the nurse in charge can be contacted at anytime. For further details of our service please feel free to contact Dr Diana Hulbert||, lead consultant on 023 8079 4121.
Emergency Medicine has really changed and is very different to when many doctors were SHOs in departments more than 10 years ago. The ED in Southampton includes national figures who are setting the quality agenda for the speciality as a whole and therefore for the local healthcare community. We have a consultant nurse with an active national profile, the President, the Dean and the Regional Chair of the College of Emergency Medicine and the Head of School of Emergency Medicine for Wessex who are always open to suggestions of how to improve our service and keen to enter into a dialogue with our Primary Care colleagues
