Respiratory centre award

The Health Foundation charity selected the Respiratory Centre team at Southampton General Hospital winners of the 2009 Shine award, which recognises new approaches in delivering care that improves quality and saves money.

The Respiratory Centre team's innovative package is leading the field in the UK for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) sufferers. It is led by Dr Simon Bourne, consultant respiratory physician, Tom Wilkinson, specialist registrar, and charge nurse Jon Watson.

This package enables patients already known to the centre to refer themselves directly with their GP’s consent, or be referred via their GP. They then have constant access, when required, to specialist healthcare professionals, nurse-led local clinics, community home visits and palliative care.

This 'hospital at home' scheme has also taken the strain off of hospital resources by aiming to discharge patients early and treat them in the comfort of their own home.

Exemplar status for SUHT

SUHT's thrombosis committee has been nationally recognised for leading the fight to prevent fatal blood clots.

The Trust has become one of 14 sites across the UK to be awarded ‘exemplar status’ by the Department of Health for its thrombosis policy.

In order to minimise the risk of developing thrombosis, SUHT's thrombosis committee produced guidelines that ensure every patient is carefully assessed and the most appropriate measures are taken to prevent this complication, including offering the most modern available drugs.

David Warwick, consultant orthopaedic surgeon and lead clinician for thrombosis, said: “We have worked through all the complex issues and the very detailed evidence to make sure that our patients have the safest and most effective prevention for this complication.”
