catheter lab 2

The CRM unit is a major tertiary regional centre in the UK and has some of the most advanced technology in electrophysiology with a strong national and international reputation.

The Cardiac Rhythm Management can be found in the Trust's new North Wing, a £60m new building that houses the Wessex Cardiac Unit – including cutting edge catheter labs, a specialist cardiac intensive care unit and dedicated cardiac scanner.

The CRM unit has its own dedicated catheter lab. It boasts all the latest equipment including an advanced biplane x-ray, which can look at the heart from two angles simultaneously to give doctors a greatly improved image.

The unit's in-built high-tech mapping facilities, including Ensite, NavX, and CARTO systems, allow them to find and target treatment to complex heart rhythm problems even in cases of complicated anatomy.

There are 10 dedicated beds for cardiac rhythm management patients, operating on a regional transfer unit basis. This helps to speed up admissions, shorten hospital stays, and discharge patients early to their homes or local hospitals to recover.

The unit also performs some routine procedures as day cases, including simple ablations and changing pacemaker and defibrillator boxes.

The aim is that even more patients would be safely discharged home on the day of the procedure for recovery.
