Why choose us

World-renowned

Southampton's Cardiac Rhythm Management unit is a well-established, internationally renowned centre of excellence for diagnosing and treating heart rhythm disorders.

Since the 1990s it has been the major electrophysiology centre on the south coast and has remained at the cutting edge of research and development since then.

It is now a major tertiary referral centre with particular expertise in the following treatments:

  • Atrial fibrillation ablation
  • Ablation and device therapies in congenital heart disease
  • Cardiac resynchronization therapy for heart failure patients

Modern facilities

The modern facilities in the new Wessex Cardiac Unit allow treatment to be provided for a wide spectrum of heart rhythm disorders.

The CRM unit has some of the most advanced technology in electrophysiology as well as its own dedicated catheter lab. The lab boasts all the latest equipment including an advanced biplane x-ray, which can look at the heart from two angles simultaneously to give doctors a greatly improved image.

Specialist team working

In order to maximise use of the facilities, the CRM team has strengthened its close working links with coronary intervention and heart failure colleagues, cardiac imaging services, Congenital Cardiac Services, and Cardiac Surgery.

The Wessex Cardiac Unit is now one of the Trust's key defining services – which means it is being developed into a global centre of excellence treating more and more patients from outside the Wessex area.

Leading research

Prof John Morgan is one of the world's leading experts in device therapy, paediatric electrophysiology and has pioneered many therapies for children with heart conditions.

The Cardiac Rhythm Management unit's state-of-the-art facilities and equipment allow it to pursue advanced electrophysiology research.

The unit generates original scientific research in the novel use of implantable defibrillators, as well as complex mapping for risk stratification of sudden cardiac death.

The unit has a strong record in international clinical trials in both device therapy and ablation procedures.
