Cardiac surgery
The cardiac surgery department carries out all aspects of heart surgery apart from transplants.
Its routine procedures include coronary artery bypass grafting, heart valve replacement and repair, aortic surgery (to the large artery that supplies the whole body with blood) and heart failure surgery.
The unit's highly-experienced consultants perform around 1,500 cases a year, and facilities are expanding to be able to treat even more patients from a wide catchment area.
In a Healthcare Commission three-year survey up to 2005, survival rates for patients undergoing cardiac surgery at the Wessex Cardiac Unit were classified 'better than expected'.
The Cardiac Surgery team work closely with other departments in the Wessex Cardiac Unit – including Congenital Cardiac Services| and Cardiac Rhythm Management|. We also have consultants providing specialist adult and paediatric cardiac anaesthetic services|.
The Wessex Cardiac Unit is one of the largest and most reputable cardiac centres in the UK. Established in 1972, it serves a population of around 2.8 million.
