Young adult cardiac unit (YACU) - E2 ward
Our purpose built unit was designed so that we can provide specialist care for young adults in an environment tailored to their needs, as well as offering the option of flexible visiting to promote patient support.
The unit gives our patients the chance to meet others with lifelong cardiac conditions in a comfortable and friendly setting. Feedback suggests the facilities provide a comfortable, more homely and relaxed environment:
The ward has excellent facilities, staff are understanding, helpful caring and very professional. Nothing is too much trouble, all very reassuring and relaxed when you are in hospital.
- Patient feedback
The unit is made up of:
The ward is managed by a senior sister - all nurses working in our unit have had training in the care of patients with congenital heart conditions.
Story behind the unit
The unit was funded by the successful 'High Five' appeal, run by the charity Wessex Heartbeat in partnership with UHS. Some of our patients were involved in the project and their requests were incorporated in the final design.
Patients of all ages with congenital heart disease are in adjacent areas further developing our theme of ‘integrated care’ from fetus to adulthood within the unit.
