Non-Invasive Cardiology
The Non-Invasive Cardiology department performs diagnostic testing for patients with suspected cardiac problems.
There are a variety of different tests that the cardiac physiologists can carry out to evaluate the condition of your heart and diagnose any problems. None of them involve incisions to your body.
Tests include ECGs, exercise tolerance testing, tilt table testing, Holter monitoring and echocardiography.
We also follow up patients who have been fitted with devices such as pacemakers and inplantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs). Southampton is the largest centre in the country for remote data management, meaning that patients can download information about their ICDs at home and send it to the department for checking.
The Non-Invasive Cardiology unit has some of the most advanced diagnostic equipment in the country and is renowned for its work alongside Southampton's other Cardiothoracic departments, such as Interventional Cardiology, Cardiac Surgery| and Cardiac Rhythm Management.|
It is one of the largest diagnostic units in the country performing approximately 18,000 echocardiograms every year.
The unit is part of the Wessex Cardiac Unit, one of the largest and most reputable cardiac centres in the UK. Established in 1972, it serves a population of around 2.8 million.
