Our facilities

The unit has some of the most advanced cardiac diagnosis equipment in the UK, including a state-of-the-art 3D echocardiology machine.

This cutting edge scanner takes a picture of the heart from two angles, and uses specialist computer software to give a 3D picture of the heart's action. It is an important research tool for the unit, but is also used to diagnose patients.

It is particularly useful for identifying congenital heart disorders – and the technology has helped to put Southampton at the leading edge of treating children and young adults with congenital heart defects.

Other diagnostic equipment includes:

  • Six state-of-the-art Phillips echocardiogram machines
  • Six other echocardiogram machines

The Non-Invasive Cardiology unit is based in the Trust's new North Wing, a £60m new building that houses the Wessex Cardiac Unit.

Its facilities include:

  • A chest pain clinic
  • Two exercise treatment rooms with equipment for carrying out stress echocardiograms
  • Five echocardiogram rooms
  • A recently-refurbished waiting area
  • An area for other non-invasive procedures such as fitting 24-hour monitoring devices
