Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI)

Our specialist TAVI team offers an alternative treatment option for patients who have been deemed unsuitable for conventional open heart surgery involving the aortic valve. The aim of a TAVI procedure is to avoid the risks of open heart surgery (for example prolonged anaesthesia and ventilation) in particularly high risk patients.

Southampton has one of the largest and most reputable cardiac centres in the UK. Offering this new and innovative procedure since 2009, our highly experienced team have dedicated TAVI lists, with facilities constantly expanding to meet the growing demands of the service.

Patients receive all aspects of pre and post TAVI care and treatment within the purpose-built centre. The department benefits from a specialised cardiac intensive care unit (CICU), cardiac high dependency unit (CHDU), state-of-the-art cardiac catheter labs, a dedicated short stay unit and cardiac MRI scanners.
