Sonographers

A sonographer is a person who has trained in the interpretation of ultrasound images of the body. The vascular sonographers are able to measure the size of blood vessels, assess the blood flow on the inside of that vessel as well as see any abnormalities of the blood vessel wall. This is a highly skilled task where accurate information can be given regarding blood vessel function, as the sonographer can assess the vessel ‘working’ rather than just a single ‘snapshot’.

There are unfortunately some restrictions to ultrasound technology. The image does depend on the blood vessel not being ‘too deep’ or ‘too hardened’. The scans also become more technically difficult when very small blood vessels are being assessed.
There is, however, no significant risk or discomfort from an ultrasound scan.

Our sonographers at SUHT are Delyth Lewis, Clare Flatman and Kirsty Rick.
