Imaging for patients with breast symptoms

If your GP or breast specialist has referred you to the Breast Imaging Unit for tests, you may be sent appointments for the breast clinic (outpatients) as well as for breast imaging.

Breast imaging

If you are over 35-years-old, a female radiographer will perform your mammogram. This only takes a few minutes. Some patients may also have an ultrasound examination and other tests at the same visit.

If you are under 35-years-old, ultrasound is usually the first examination of choice.

The results from these examinations are sent to your GP and/or the breast clinic.

Outpatient breast clinic

If you are attending the outpatient breast clinic it is not always possible for your imaging appointment to be on the same day. So, please check your appointment letter(s) carefully. During your appointment you will be examined by a breast specialist, and the results of any imaging or other tests will be explained and discussed with you.

You may wish to bring someone with you to discuss any information or results that you receive. Our specialist breast care nurses are also present at these clinics for additional support.

Breast Cancer Support Group

There is a support group managed by and run for women and men diagnosed with breast cancer. Regular, friendly, informal meetings take place in the Macmillan Centre, B Level, Southampton General Hospital on the last Friday of each month, starting at 2pm. For more information please contact the specialist breast care nurses.

Wessex Cancer Trust

The Wessex Cancer Trust supports many aspects of cancer care for adults and children, including research, counselling, the production of information leaflets, the appointment of breast care nurses, the improvement of patient facilities, the purchase of equipment and the provision of mobile breast screening units as well as, financial help for cancer patients and their families.
