Haematology

The haematology department provides a comprehensive clinical and laboratory diagnostic service. Expertise within the team covers the areas of haemato-oncology, stem cell transplantation, haemostasis and thrombosis, general consultative and diagnostic haematology. The department also works closely with our child health teams to support the diagnosis and management of children with haematological problems and with immunology to provide highly specialist diagnostic services.

A comprehensive service for haemophilia patients is provided for Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and parts of Dorset. The service is supported by a team of highly trained clinical nurse specialists in leukaemia and myeloma, transplantation, haemostasis and thrombosis, haemoglobinopathy and transfusion medicine.

Patients undergoing intensive chemotherapy for haematological malignancy or transplantation are managed in a 20-bed specialist unit (ward C6L). Haematology patients requiring day-case treatments or review are managed on C3 Hamwic Ward. Cell collection and plasma exchange are performed in a new, dedicated regional apheresis suite on C7 ward through the Wessex Blood and Marrow Transplant Unit (WBMTU). There are also specialist facilities for the management of haemophilia patients with outpatient clinics currently being held at the Royal South Hants hospital and in pathology outpatients at Southampton General Hospital.
