Macmillan acute oncology service
The Macmillan acute oncology service at Southampton General Hospital is a service for people who require urgent admission as a result of their cancer, suspected cancer or treatment.
This four-bed unit is situated next door to the main emergency department. It has a 24/7 emergency telephone and is staffed by a team of emergency practitioners.
Cancer teams work closely with all departments to ensure anyone who has a cancer diagnosis or suspected cancer but is admitted for another reason is seen by a specialist within 24 hours.
The initiative, developed and funded by Macmillan Cancer Support in partnership with the Trust, gives people with cancer easier access to the necessary specialists and speed up the admission process.
