Children's allergy - Why choose us?

Southampton's allergy and immunology unit is nationally-renowned for its work in the diagnosis and treatment of allergies and diseases affecting the immune system.

It is one of only six centres in the UK which provide a comprehensive allergy and immunology service. Staff in the paediatric team are not only highly-trained experts in their fields but everyone, including doctors, nurses and dieticians, is also specially-trained in treating children.

The paediatric allergy service has expertise in managing all allergic conditions including food, bee and wasp, latex, respiratory and ear, nose and throat (ENT) allergies.

The allergy unit has been treating children for more than 16 years.

Nurses are highly-skilled in areas such as skin prick testing, immunotherapy and food challenges, as well as educating families about how to manage allergies.

Southampton's allergy and immunology team also plays a vital role in educating students, health care professionals and community health workers.

Both the allergy and immunology teams disseminate their knowledge and expertise locally and nationally through teaching and training other doctors and nurses.

There is a strong research programme which aims to improve understanding of why people develop allergies and how children with allergies should be treated.

The service is strongly supported by a team of specialists throughout the hospital including paediatric dermatologists, gastroenterologists, ENT specialists and respiratory paediatricians.
