What happens when I come in?
Initially most children will be attending an immunology clinic which is held weekly at Southampton General Hospital.
At the clinic your child will be assessed, tested and diagnosed by a team of people, including consultants and specialist nurses all of whom are specially-trained in both immunology and looking after children.
Southampton is one of just a few centres where staff have both these specialisms.
Disorders of the immune system are rare and in many cases results will show that your child's immune system is working normally. They may be asked to have a blood test to confirm this.
If an immune deficiency is suspected it is unusual for a diagnosis to be made on your child's first visit as blood tests will be required to confirm any diagnosis.
There are a wide range of treatments available for immunodeficiencies and once your child's condition has been identified, the best treatment to manage it will be explained to you. Further information about primary immunodeficiencies is available from the Primary Immunodeficiancy Association at www.pia.org.uk.
The doctors and specialist nurses will help you understand the results, answer any questions and will also offer advice and training in the use of any drugs.
