Our facilities
Southampton General Hospital's £1.4m extended and refurbished Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was opened in December 2006, and is now one of the biggest neonatal care facilities in the country.
The NICU has the latest in neonatal intensive care equipment and many specialist neonatal procedures, including surgery, can be performed at the unit.
All 36 cots (20 intensive or high dependency cots and 16 special care cots) and state-of-the-art monitoring equipment are colour-coded to give each baby its own place in the world and to ensure safety, as staff make clear distinctions between each child's care area.
A colourful snakes and ladders theme on the floor and walls extends right through the unit, both in the corridors and nurseries, reinforcing the child-friendly nature of the unit.
There are also parent and carer facilities available both on the unit and within the hospital site.
