Why choose us: research and education
We are at the cutting edge of research and are committed to educating our staff; the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit has close links with the University of Southampton Medical School| and the School of Midwifery (school of Health Sciences) and is an active participant in medical and nurse education.
There is a programme of education for all staff and a regular commitment from the neonatal staff to teaching on courses and education programmes for neonatal nurses, midwives, medical students, nurse practitioners, postgraduate medical staff and members of the Wessex Deanery|.
The Neonatal Unit is actively involved in research, both locally and nationally and is supported by the University of Southampton and, in particular, Professor Howard Clark|, whose main area of research interest is the respiratory Surfactant system.
Southampton was recently awarded the Biomedical Research Units (BRU) in Nutrition and Respiratory Medicine by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR). This focuses on optimising nutrition in the pre-term babies and evaluating the impact of nutritional factors on neonatal chronic lung disease, growth and neurodevelopmental outcomes of premature infants. Other aspects of neonatal research focuses on the lung surfactant system, optimising surfactant therapy to reduce the incidence of neonatal chronic lung disease.
The neonatal team are active members of the Neonatal Society|, the British Association of Perinatal Medicine|, the and the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health|.
