Research and development
PICU participates actively in clinical and laboratory based research at a local, national and international level.
Our projects have included the study of surfactant properties, genetic influences on the systemic inflammatory response syndrome and the family’s experience of PICU. These projects have been presented nationally and internationally, winning awards and achieving recognition for the Trust.
We actively encourage regional neonatal units and adult ICUs that will increasingly look after a population of children normally transferred to PICU, to actively seek participation in studies.
We have close links to the Wellcome Trust Research Facility in Southampton that runs hospital, PICU and community based research projects (vaccine, sepsis and immunological failure related).
In conjunction with the Southampton Clinical Research Institute (SCRI) we will help with study design, statistical input and peer review. We can advise and support grant applications from anyone with interesting paediatric research ideas.
