Our facilities
Our GI (gastrointestinal) ward has a four-bedded bay adjacent to the endoscopy unit. Outpatient clinics are held in a newly developed outpatient centre. We also have an endoscopy unit with three treatment rooms. There is a large acute medical unit (AMU) next to the emergency and radiology departments which is supervised by four acute medical consultants.
SUHT is a dedicated regional training centre for ERCP (Endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography). Our five specialists provide four weekly lists with general anaesthetic support where appropriate. With high quality interventional radiology support, the service compliments those which are carried out by the hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery groups.
We have the capability of offering a full service for pancreatic and biliary cancers and bile duct problems, which we link in with our specialist multidisciplinary team and we have the capacity to provide an interventional radiology service for difficult and out of hours cases. We recently acquired the new spyglass ERCP system and are able to offer this service throughout the region, including ERCP cover for the Channel Islands.
We are the only hospital in Wessex providing a liver transplantation service. We have an established link with Addenbrooke’s hospital in Cambridge and an established funding stream for our listed patients. The transplant service also brings in complex non-transplantable patients, who are able to access our other services.
Our viral hepatitis service provides treatment for viral hepatitis B and C. We are the regional referral centre for this and hospital of choice for complex disease. We have an established and highly skilled team of clinical nurse specialists and through our dedicated clinical research facility we are also able to provide our patients with state of the art treatments for these conditions.
We also provide a regional GI bleeds service; we have a 24 hour a day on call consultant lead gastroenterology rota with specialist endoscopy nurse assistance. This is supported by 24/7 availability of a surgical team. Interventional radiology is also available on site and is able to assist with difficult cases that may require TIPSS (Transjugular Intrahepatic PortoSystemic Shunt) or angiography.
