Why choose us?

The Hepatology team are able to offer a number of key services which are unique to Southampton General Hospital. We are the regional referral unit for complex liver disease including liver transplantation and the management of hepatocellular carcinoma.

We are able to provide complex interventional radiological treatments including transjugular intrahepatic porto systemic shunting, percutaneous transpatic cholangiography, radio frequency ablation of liver lesions and trans arterial chemoembolisation of liver lesions.

For complex biliary tract work we provide a world class ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography) service and have recently acquired the new spyglass technology, which is enhancing our treatment and investigation of complex biliary cancers.

The department now also benefits from advanced twenty-first century endoscopic equipment, which enables endoscopic ultrasound and endomucosal resection.

Southampton has the largest experience of laparoscopic liver resection in the UK. In 2009, over 50% of all liver surgery was performed laparoscopically. In the UK there are very few surgeons who have performed laparoscopic liver resection and in total there have probably been fewer than three hundred and fifty cases performed across the nation in the last six years, half of these have been done in Southampton.
