What to expect at an adult hearing assessment

Audiology Otoscopy (adult hearing assessment):An adult hearing assessment appointment may take up to 45 minutes.

The audiologist will check your ears for wax, infection or any other abnormality.

You will then have a hearing test, which involves wearing a pair of headphones and pressing a button whenever you hear a "beep". The audiologist will then explain the results and, based on these and on the information you give us, we will tell you whether you are likely to benefit from a hearing aid.

You may then be referred to the Ear, Nose and Throat Department for further investigation by a specialist doctor.

If the audiologist recommends a hearing aid and you decide that you would like to try one, the audiologist will take an impression of one of your ears. A specialist laboratory will use the impression to make your earmould, which will carry the sound from the hearing aid into your ear. You may have a hearing aid for each ear if this is likely to be helpful.

You will be offered another appointment to come back to us and have your hearing aid(s) fitted.
