Emergency response

The Resuscitation Team are based on E level of Southampton General Hospital.

However, when responding to a clinical emergency call they cover the whole Trust, including Princess Anne Hospital and the hospital grounds.

Training

They use Southampton General Hospital's education unit, IDEAL, in the South Academic Block, when running training sessions for staff or external healthcare professionals.

The Resuscitation Team have access to the latest training mannequins and dummies. Most of their teaching is scenario-based – so students and staff have an opportunity to practise the skills they are learning.

The most advanced mannequins can be shocked (defibrillated) and can have tubes placed into them during scenario-based training.

Equipment

The Resuscitation Team is also responsible for the Trust's state-of-the-art resuscitation equipment.

New equipment in the Trust includes defibrillators, which have a built-in pressure sensor. This defibrillator gives verbal commands to the person carrying out the resuscitation attempt, telling them whether they need to compress deeper, harder, go faster or slower when delivering the chest compressions.

By 2010 the Trust should be equipped with a number of these defibrillators.
