What we do
The Resuscitation Team are the people who are required to stay up to date with the very latest resuscitation advice, guidance and techniques.
It is their role to implement these techniques in a clinical environment – and instruct healthcare professionals in correct resuscitation.
Clinical
The Resuscitation Teamensure the cardiac arrest equipment within the Trust is checked, in good working order and meets current national standards.
Every clinical area has a resuscitation trolley. There are around 200 resuscitation trolleys within the Trust.
If a patient or visitor suffers a cardiac arrest anywhere on the Trust site – including the hospital's car parks – the duty officer of the Resuscitation Team will attend. It is their job to:
-
Provide immediate care and work with other members of the multidisciplinary resuscitation team. These other members include doctors, nurses and technicians.
-
Ensure national resuscitation methods and techniques are being upheld.
-
Provide expert clinical skills and support.
The team responds to approximately 30 calls per week, and documents details of the cardiac arrest for audit purposes.
Southampton has higher survival rates for on-site cardiac arrests than most hospitals.
Education
The team runs several nationally-recognised courses for healthcare professionals both within the Trust and externally.
Resuscitation courses provided in the Trust include:
-
A two-hour basic life support workshop for any member of trust staff
-
A one-day immediate life support course for qualified members of trust staff
-
A two-day advanced life support course based on scenario teaching
-
A three-day advanced paediatric life support course for healthcare professionals working with children from across the region
The Resuscitation Team also provides regular troubleshooting advice to colleagues within the Trust on equipment, techniques and resuscitation guidelines.
Audit
The team carries out audits to help monitor cardiac events. Their findings are evaluated, and used to develop strategies to further improve the delivery of care to our patients.
