Eye unit consultants
The eye unit’s experienced team of consultants carry out a variety of clinical, teaching and research work alongside the nursing team, led by Matron Jagir Sahota.
Each consultant has a sub-specialty, which is a particular area of interest and expertise within ophthalmology, but consultants from different specialties jointly cover other areas such as the eye emergency department.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and medical retina
Professor Andrew Lotery| is professor of ophthalmology at the University of Southampton and his clinical and research interests are in medical retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and inherited retinal diseases. He also teaches and performs cataract surgery.

Medical retina / uveitis
Christina Rennie| specialises in looking after patients with medical retinal problems, particularly diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. She is the clinical lead for the Southampton diabetic retinopathy screening service. Mrs Rennie also undertakes cataract surgery.

Vitreoretinal surgery
Andrew Luff is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon specialising in vitreoretinal surgery and is a recognised surgical lecturer.

Glaucoma
Aby Jacob| specialises in caring for people with glaucoma, and has a research interest in its surgical treatment and epidemiology. He has introduced tube/valve drainage implant and non-penetrating glaucoma surgery at Southampton and also performs difficult cataract and combined cataract/glaucoma surgery.

Alex Macleod| established the sub-specialist glaucoma service in Southampton and undertakes research into the genetics of open angle glaucoma.

Corneal and external eye disorders
David Anderson| has developed lamellar corneal surgery including DSEK for selective endothelial replacement and DALK for Keratoconus. He also has an interest in complex cataract surgery, ocular surface reconstruction and refractive surgery.

Parwez Hossain| is experienced in allergic eye disease, microbial keratitis, blepharitis, dry eyes, ocular surface reconstruction, corneal transplantation, scleritis, auto-immune anterior segment inflammatory disease and complex cataract surgery. He is a senior lecturer in ophthalmology at the University of Southampton.

Paediatrics
Peter Hodgkins specialises in the treatment of watery eyes, droopy eyelids, paediatric cataracts and squints.

Rob Morris developed and runs a tertiary referral clinic for complex squints. He instigated day case cataract surgery in Southampton and has an interest in new intraocular lens implant development.
