Meet the team
Southampton's orthoptic department has seven orthoptists, who have specifically studied the treatment and diagnosis of problems with eye movement and visual development.
A dedicated team of four clerical officers support these orthoptists.
Krys Coster, head orthoptist
Krys has been practising for over 32 years. She qualified at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Hospital in 1980 and first worked at Whipps Cross Hospital, in London.
Krys became a clinical teacher in 1983 and Head Orthoptist at Newham General Hospital, in East London, in 1990.
She came to Southampton Eye Hospital in 1991 as Head Orthoptist and introduced undergraduate teaching for orthoptic students in 1994.
Since 1991 Krys has increased staffing levels and expanded the pre-school screening programme.
The six other orthoptists each have their own interest such as paediatric cataracts, electrodiagnostics, special needs community clinics, low vision aids, paediatric counselling, teaching, glaucoma and specialised visual fields for children.
