Southampton's allergy and immunology unit is nationally-renowned for its work in the diagnosis and treatment of allergies and diseases affecting the immune system.

It is one of only six centres in the UK which provide a comprehensive allergy and immunology service and, outside of London, is the largest unit in the country.

Staff are highly-trained experts in their fields and cover the whole range of allergy and immunology diagnosis and treatment.

Allergic disorders have increased dramatically over the last few decades and there is a growing need to provide allergy and immunology services both at hospitals and in the community.

As well as treating patients, Southampton's allergy and immunology team plays a vital role in educating students, professionals and community health workers.

They disseminate their knowledge and expertise throughout the local community via GPs, primary care trusts and Southampton University.

They are also key figures in the research of allergy and immunology and have been involved in the early development of new drugs and drug trials.

The unit predominantly provides an outpatient service, however, where necessary, it uses the excellent resources at its partner hospitals.
