Allergy and immunology
Southampton is proud to boast the largest allergy and immunology centre outside of London. It offers a comprehensive service from diagnosis to treatment for both adults and children and is one of only six such units in the country.
As a regional centre of excellence, the unit treats patients from a wide area including Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset, West Sussex, parts of Berkshire, the Isle of Wight and is even the first port of call for the Falkland Islands.
Allergic disorders have become more prevalent over the last few decades and the team in Southampton sees nearly 3,000 child and adult patients a year.
They provide the investigation, diagnosis and treatment of all major allergic and immunological disorders which result from either under or overactivity of the immune system.
Primarily an outpatient service, the team has strong links with the local hospitals and, where necessary, they use their excellent facilities. The diagnostic laboratories for allergy and immune disorders are also led by members of the unit.
As well as being a centre of expertise for clinical practice, the allergy and immunology unit is a key player in the education and dissemination of its knowledge and information to community health providers both locally and nationally.
All staff also teach on the University of Southampton MSc programme in allergy, and on locally-organised update courses in allergy.
The unit is divided into two areas:
Allergy and immunology for adults
Allergy and immunology for children
