Children's allergy

The Children’s Allergy Clinic offers a comprehensive service for childreChildren's allery waiting arean with severe and multiple allergies.

We aim to provide a complete allergy evaluation at just one visit. For most children allergy test results are available on the same day and will be discussed with you in detail by your doctor or allergy nurse specialist. 

The clinics cover

  • food allergy and intolerance
  • anaphylaxis – severe allergic reaction
  • asthma
  • allergy-related skin disorders – such as eczema, dermatitis, urticaria (hives) and angio-oedema (weals beneath the skin)
  • hayfever (allergic rhinitis)
  • oral allergy syndrome
  • bee and wasp sting allergy
  • latex allergy
  • drug allergy
  • immunotherapy/desensitisation – series of injections of a small amount of the allergen to build up body's resistance
  • specialist immunisation

The team does more than just allergy testing, we help children with allergies as they grow up and their immune system becomes mature. We support families through these changes until they are ready for the transition to adulthood. Seven clinics are held each week at Southampton General Hospital in the and are led by consultants and specialist children’s allergy nurses in a dedicated Children's Outpatient Department|.

Southampton is a teaching hospital and sometimes doctors, nurses and dietitians training in allergy will be in the allergy clinic.
