Excellent outcomes for patients

Southampton's General Intensive Care Unit delivers some of the best results in the country for intensive care.

The unit is monitored by ICNARC, the Intensive Care National Audit and Research Committee. This body keeps a record of every patient that passes through intensive care, and what happens to them.

Southampton regularly appears in the top five units in the country, looking at mortality rates, time spend in intensive care and what happens to patients after they leave.

Specialist colleagues

The dedicated team of General ICU consultants work closely with specialist colleagues in cardiac care, neuro and thoracics, to ensure that patients are given the most appropriate care.

Research links

ICU doctors are also at the forefront of national and international research into the development of critical care, and regularly involved in research projects and trials.

Expertise

With almost 2,000 patients coming to the unit from across Southampton every year, as well as further afield if they have been referred to the hospital for specialist services, the ICU team has built up a wealth of expertise in treating critically ill patients.

The team works efficiently and effectively together to deliver quality care.

Robust training programme

Southampton has an excellent training programme for staff, that equips them with skills and continues to educate them in changing techniques and new healthcare developments.

The Trust has been granted official recognition by the Intercollegiate Board for Training in Intensive Care Medicine. ICU consultants and trainers are involved in educating medical colleagues from other hospitals across the region.
