Meet the team
Patients on PICU are cared for by a multidisciplinary team of doctors|, specialist nurses|, technicians, pharmacists, physiotherapists, dieticians, health care assistants and administrative support assistants.
We have close links to many other services including psychologists and the chaplaincy.
We are committed to providing family-centred care and encourage families to be an integral part of the team and be present as much as they wish throughout their child’s stay.
Medical team
Southampton PICU was established by Dr Michael Marsh| and is now headed by the director, Dr Peter Wilson|.
The medical team consists of seven consultants who are all accredited subspecialists in paediatric intensive care medicine.
Each consultant has a lead role:
As a lead centre for training, we have speciality trainees from paediatrics and anaesthetics who rotate through the unit.
The medical team work a shift system with handover at 8.30am and 9pm.
Nursing team
Carol Purcell is the PICU matron and head of the PICU nursing team.

There are over 70 nurses on the team with up to 11 on the unit at any one time. They work a shift system with handovers at 8am and 8pm.
