Labour ward
Obstetrician-led units are based in the main maternity hospital and are primarily for women with medical, pregnancy or labour complications or for women planning to have an epidural for labour.
The Labour Ward at the Princess Anne hospital has 13 birth rooms and one birth pool. There is a four bed induction of labour suite, and a recovery area with two beds for women who have had a caesarean section. We also have a high dependency unit to care for women with rare, but more severe, complications of pregnancy. The neonatal unit and operating theatre are on the same floor allow rapid transfer if necessary. We have specialist obstetric anaesthesia| services that cater for all high and low risk deliveries.
We promote a multidisciplinary team approach to encourage each woman to make informed choices about her labour and care, striving to meet her needs and respect her wishes while maintaining the highest level of safety for both mother and baby.
Normal visiting patterns do not exist for labour ward due to the nature of the care being given. Our preference is for only one partner/person to be present to over a 24 hour period.
