Radiation protection service
We support healthcare establishments in the use of ionising radiation. Current clients include hospitals and dental clinics throughout Hampshire and Isle of Wight, States of Guernsey and the School of Medicine at the University of Southampton. In 1996, our service was awarded ISO certification and is currently accredited with ISO 9001.
Radiation protection advice and measurements
We offer the services of an accredited radiation protection advisor, and carry out radiation measurements of ionising radiations, particularly in the fields of medical, dental and veterinary radiology, radiotherapy and the medical uses of radionuclides.
We provide expert advice to ensure compliance with legislation in the planning and setting up of installations or services. Our service ensures involvement of other radiation experts within the department, particularly in the fields of non-ionising radiations (such as lasers, MRI, intense light sources, microwaves) and radiotherapeutic techniques using linear accelerators (linacs) or radionuclides.
We can provide emergency assistance in the event of a radiation incident. Outside of normal working hours, contact the Southampton General Hospital switchboard (023 8077 2222). Our service is included in the National Arrangements for Incidents Involving Radioactivity (NAIR) scheme.
