Radiotherapy physics services
Our radiotherapy physics group and radiotherapy engineering services provide technical and scientific support to the cancer care care group.
Our radiotherapy department has six linear accelerators all with MLC, portal imaging and IMRT capability. Cone beam CT supports IGRT on one linac. Our department has a dedicated wide bore CT scanner as well as a traditional simulator. We perform treatment planning for external beam treatments on CMS Xio treatment planning systems, while using Prosoma for virtual stimulation.
We support a comprehensive brachytherapy service including HDR CT planned gynaecological treatments provided using Nucletron Microselection and Oncentra GYN, prostate brachytherapy with I125 seeds and I131 treatments for the ablation of thyroid tumours. Our radiotherapy physics group in Winchester also supports an intraoperative radiotherapy service.
We are planning to expand the department, including a managed equipment service to ensure an appropriate equipment replacement programme and maintain state of the art facilities. We also support training of clinical scientists and clinical technologists.

Clare Birch is head of the radiotherapy physics service.
Our team includes clinical scientists (medical physicists), clinical technologists, dosimetrists and radiographers. We provide expertise through teams specialising in clinical radiotherapy physics (treatment planning and mould room services), quality assurance and dosimetry, networking and IT, radiotherapy electronic engineering services and research and development.
