Medical physics and bioengineering
The medical physics and bioengineering department provides a diverse range of high quality scientific, technical, clinical, engineering and educational expertise and R&D support to Southampton University Hospitals, the University of Southampton and other customers. Services are provided throughout the South East region and beyond.
The department consists of staff from a variety of professional disciplines including clinical scientists, clinical engineers, clinical technologists, radiographers, dosimetrists and medical, nursing, administration and clerical staff.
The department offers a range of patient services including assessment of deep vein thrombosis, and supports patient care through radiotherapy physics as well as medical equipment services such as medical device development and the medical equipment library. The department provides radiation protection advice and laser protection advice to Southampton University Hospitals and other organisations.
The department carries out training of medical physicists, clinical engineers and clinical technologists. Members of the department are also involved in teaching many other courses, including pressure ulcer prevention, laser safety, physics for radiologists, transcranial doppler ultrasound and (in conjunction with the University of Southampton) undergraduate medical physics.
Members of the department publish and present research at national and international meetings. The department has excellent links with the faculties of medicine, health and biological sciences, and science and engineering in the University of Southampton with many collaborative projects being undertaken. There are several members of staff registered for part time postgraduate research sponsored by the department.
