TMD for non-invasive intracranial pressure measurement

The NIPA (Non-Invasive Intracranial Assessment) unit has over 15 years of experience assessing intracranial pressure non-invasively using the ‘MMS-11 cerebral and cochlear fluid pressure analyser’ also known as the ‘MMS-11 tympanic membrane displacement (TMD) analyser’. This technique is used principally for assessing relative changes in pressure, such as in patients undergoing medical or surgical treatment that is being used to regulate intracranial pressure.

Patients in the following categories may benefit from further investigation by the NIPA Unit:

  • Patients at risk of intracranial hypertension or hypotension, and those who would benefit from short, medium or long-term serial pressure measurements.
  • Paediatric and adults patients where a non-invasive intracranial pressure measurement technique would reduce the need for lumbar puncture or surgical methods of intracranial pressure monitoring.
