Radiation protection service
The radiation protection service (part of the medical physics department|) supports healthcare establishments in their use of ionising radiation. Current clients include hospitals and dental clinics throughout Hampshire and Isle of Wight, States of Guernsey and the School of Medicine at the University of Southampton. In 1996 the radiation protection service was awarded ISO certification and is currently accredited with ISO 9001
Main Functions
Radiation protection advice and measurements
We offer the services of an accredited radiation protection advisor, and carry out radiation measurements of ionising radiations, particularly in the fields of medical, dental and veterinary radiology, radiotherapy and the medical uses of radionuclides.
We provide expert advice to ensure compliance with legislation in the planning and setting up of installations or services. The radiation protection services ensures involvement of other radiation experts within the department, particularly in the fields of non-ionising radiations (lasers, MRI, intense light sources, microwaves and so on) and radiotherapeutic techniques using linear accelerators (linacs) or radionuclides.
Emergency service
The service can provide emergency assistance in the event of a radiation incident. This provision can be extended to outside of normal working hours by use of the Southampton General Hospital switchboard. The service is included in the National Arrangements for Incidents involving Radioactivity (NAIR) scheme.
