Dr Adams has broad geriatric and general medicine experience and runs the Parkinson's services for part of the New Forest. He has postgraduate qualifications in medical education and has undertaken a number of Trust and deanery educational management positions.

Dr Jonathan Sparkes, lead consultant

Dr Sparkes provides acute inpatient care and community based care for older people from the east side of Southampton. He works closely with community health teams to provide intermediate care and liaises with primary care partners.

Dr Akerman cares for all older people admitted with medical problems from the New Forest area and also runs general medicine and Parkinson’s disease clinics at Hythe Hospital.

Dr Daniel Baylis

Dr Baylis works with a team of healthcare professionals to care for older patients who live in the west of Southampton. This includes managing the reason for admission to hospital and creating a longer term plan for ongoing care in the community, when needed.

Dr Ibrahim Bodagh

Dr Bodagh's work includes the assessment and management of patients admitted to the acute medical unit, and to the department for medicine for older people wards. He also liaises with other disciplines to facilitate discharge of patients to the community.

Dr Gilson works with a multidisciplinary team to care for older patients from the Hythe area. Her role includes community geriatrics which involves close working with the community team and GPs conducting home visits and comprehensive geriatric assessments.

Dr Hall is experienced in the management of frail older people with multiple complex disorders. She has a special interest in developing the management pathway of frail older people at the 'front door' of the hospital and has a keen interest in medical ethics and law.

Dr Erisa Ito

Dr Ito works closely with community teams in the east of Southampton to ensure that her patients have a continuity of care, both in and out of hospital. Her work primarily involves seeing housebound older people at home, to provide comprehensive geriatric assessments and falls assessments.

Therapists

Medicine for older people therapy-team

  • Linda Snook, advanced specialist (occupational therapist)
  • Hannah Wood, advanced specialist (physiotherapist)
  • Caroline Harper, advanced specialist (occupational therapist)

Our therapy team specialise in treating and rehabilitating older people with a variety of medical conditions, specialising in frailty, falls and dementia care. They work closely with the multidisciplinary team to enhance patients quality of life, functional ability and facilitate safe discharges to appropriate destinations. The team includes dedicated physiotherapists, occupational therapists and therapy support staff who provide a seven-day service of therapy to our patients. Some of their key roles include promoting patients’ mobility and physical function, reducing patients risks of falls, providing respiratory care, providing assessments and interventions for cognitive impairments and issuing patients with equipment to promote their independence. The therapy team will also facilitate patients in setting, and achieving, realistic goals to enhance their quality of life in their later years.
