Pharmacy

Almost all patients receive some sort of medicine during their time in the hospital. The pharmacy department makes sure the medicines you take are safe, appropriate and cost-effective.

The department employs a variety of staff, including pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, pharmacy support workers and clerical staff. You may come across some of these people during your hospital stay.

Patients' own drugs scheme (PODs)

If admitted to hospital, you will be encouraged to bring in your medication from home.

It will be checked by a pharmacy technician, stored in a secure bedside locker and administered as usual, to ensure you continue on the same treatment plan.

What happens when I come in?

When on the ward you will meet the clinical pharmacist or the medicine liaison technician.

They will ask you questions about medication you are taking, and may ask to look at the medication you have brought in with you. They do this to make sure you are taking the right drugs, and to make sure that anything else you are prescribed will work with your existing medication.

You will see the clinical pharmacist or the medicine liaison technician every weekday during your stay in hospital. Feel free to ask them any questions about the drugs you are taking.

When you leave hospital you will be supplied with at least two weeks' worth of medication to take home.
