Diagnosis and treatment
Patients will be referred to the acute pain team by ward staff such as a doctor, nurse or physiotherapist.
The acute pain team could advise several different treatment options, including:
- patient-controlled analgesia (painkiller)
- diversionary therapy including television or toys for children, music or massage
The acute pain nurse specialists might also advise medical staff on different drugs or different drug combinations available to the patient.
They are also on hand to monitor patients who have been under anaesthetic for surgery, giving appropriate levels of pain relief to keep the patient comfortable.
