What happens when I come in?

If you are staying on a hospital ward and you are in severe pain, perhaps after surgery, you are likely to be referred to the acute pain team.

Referrals are made by ward staff including nurses and physiotherapists.

When the acute pain team nurse arrives, they will introduce themselves to you. They will then make a detailed assessment of your pain.

They may ask you questions to encourage you to describe the pain and will want to find out how you usually copy with pain. The nurse will also speak to the medical team on the ward about your condition.

The acute pain team nurse will then devise a treatment plan to help you with the pain. The ward nursing team may implement the plan, but it will be directed by the acute pain team.

The acute pain team will then carry out an evaluation of the methods used. If it hasn't eased your pain, they may try another option.
