Why choose us?

Southampton University Hospitals Trust has one of the most specialised hand surgery units in the UK. We employ a team of highly-respected, specialist hand, wrist and elbow orthopaedic surgeons and therapists, whose work has an international reputation. We take referrals from GPs and other consultants from all over the south of England and the Channel Islands.

The team has all the resources of a large acute hospital trust behind them, including the latest equipment, and can work together with their colleagues in other specialities such as cancer care and paediatrics to treat complicated cross-disciplinary cases.

As SUHT is a teaching hospital, our specialists are responsible for educating the next generation of general orthopaedic surgeons and specialised hand surgeons. But it also means we do complex and unusual work which is not widely available in other hospitals, because the team are at the forefront of research into new treatments and procedures. Recent achievements include the introduction of wrist joint replacements and more small hand joint replacements, such as knuckle replacements. The department has also been using a new treatment that allows damaged nerves in the hand to grow back.
