Nervous system (neurology)
The Wessex Neurological Centre provides a dedicated, integrated 24 hour acute neurosurgical and neurological assessment, investigation and treatment service.
It incorporates a specialist Epilepsy service|, Sub-arachnoid haemorrhage| treatment and information service and a comprehensive stroke service|.
We are one of the largest neuroscience centres in the country, serving a population of over 2.8 million. Based at Southampton General Hospital, each year we treat approximately 4,000 inpatients and 13,000 outpatients.
Wards and departments
Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit
This newly-built unit has intensive care beds and high dependency beds for patients following cranial/spinal trauma, major post-operative neurosurgery and those with acute neurological conditions. The 12 beds can be used flexibly and are fully integrated with the rest of the Centre. Support accommodation is also available within the Unit.
Ward C - Adult Neurology
This ward has 14 short stay beds, 8 day care beds and one video telemetry bed.
Children's neurosurgery
This five bedded recently refurbished area is for children with neurosurgical conditions and there is one paediatric video telemetry bed. Facilities are also available for parents to stay.
Ward D - Adult Neurosurgery
This 25 bed ward accommodates patients with acute neurosurgical conditions and has side room facilities for private patient care.
Stanley Graveson Ward - Adult Neurology
This 14 bed ward admits patient with acute and chronic neurological disease.
Stroke ward - F8
This ward has 28 beds.
Victoria House
This 8 bed facility is dedicated to neurological rehabilitation.
Specialities
Clinical Neurophysiology
All neurophysiology is undertaken in this department, including electrophysiology and visual fields tests (peripheral vision tests). Our diagnostic procedures include EEG (electroencethalogram - brainwaves test), evoked responses, nerve conductions, EMG (electromyogram - stimulation of nerves and muscles) and telemetric EEG (wearing of EEG monitor for at least a day). The department investigates both inpatients and outpatients.
Neuropsychology
This department provides a diagnostic service for patients with suspected or established brain disease/injury. It also has a special interest in patients with memory disorder, including amnesia and temporal lobe pathologies.
Neurological outpatients
Neurology, neurosurgery and adult neuro-oncology clinics take place in this newly refurbished department, which also has a large waiting area with play facilities for children.
