Critical care technicians
There are 5 critical care technicians (CCTs) on NICU, led by Ian Tatlow. In addition to the more usual roles of maintaining the equipment and training staff in the use of equipment, NICU has led a nationwide project to train the CCTs in a range of what have traditionally been seen as medical tasks. The CCTs are trained in a range of procedures including the placement of invasive monitoring and are responsible for the safe transfer of patients both within the hospital (for scans and to the operating theatres) and for repatriation to their own hospitals.
Physiotherapy team
Our physiotherapy team specialises in neurocritical care. They work throughout the Wessex Neurological Centre. The physiotherapists work in close liaison with the medical, nursing and occupational therapy team. They provide respiratory assessment and treatment for ventilated and non-ventilated patients, maintain joint and muscle flexibility and set up exercise programs for patients who are able to participate. Rehabilitation programmes will start as soon as possible following admission.
Clerical staff
We have a ward clerk who will often be the first person you speak to when you call the unit. He ensures that we have the correct notes and images available for us to do our work.
Other services
NICU has a free legal service that is available to discuss any legal issues that arise for patients or their relatives. Whilst we realise that the medical issues are the priority, many families have legal concerns that we can help with. These can include critical illness insurance, employment or welfare issues, power of attorney, dealing with the bank or the police and compensation claims. Appointments can be arranged through Miranda Gardner or Dr. Eynon’s| secretary (Barbara Pragnell-Raasch).
