Stroke services
Southampton General Hospital has a 28 bed acute stroke unit where most stroke patients are assessed and cared for. The initial focus is on investigating the stroke and its risk factors, so treatment and prevention of further strokes can be planned. We also have a 24/7 thrombolysis service for acute stroke care.
Rehabilitation starts from day one, with a plan for treatment such as methods of feeding, communication and other aspects of care, drawn up by the rehabilitation team. This team is made up of physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, and nursing and medical staff.
Post acute rehabilitation, which occurs two to three weeks after admission, is likely to be at an outside rehabilitation unit. These are at the Western Hospital and Lymington hospital. Patient needs and closeness to home determine which unit is used, all of which is discussed with the patient before leaving the acute unit.
