Children's neurological therapy

The children's neurological team is made up of physiotherapists, occupational therapists and therapy assistants. We are a recognised rehabilitation centre providing rehabilitation for patients suffering from injuries or illnesses affecting their central nervous system including:

  • head injuries
  • stroke
  • spinal cord injuries or tumours

Inpatient rehabilitation for neurological patients can start in the very acute stages on PICU or HDU. This rehabilitation continues throughout their stay in hospital until discharge for some patients - this can include a set amount of outpatient appointments following discharge.

Therapy can take place in a variety of settings from children's bedside to our treatment room or in hydrotherapy. Our patients can be moved from the hospital environment to Bursledon House for ongoing rehabilitation once they are medically well enough.

Our therapists also cover Bursledon House, working as part of the multidisciplinary team to help patients admitted for various reasons including chronic fatigue, chronic pain, obesity and anxiety.

Occupational therapists are involved in assessing and referring for appropriate equipment and seating for our neurological patients. They liaise with community teams and wheelchair services as required. As well as looking at function and equipment that can enable our patients to be as independent as possible following their stay in hospital.

Physiotherapists can also be found working alongside consultants in botulinum toxin clinic, complex movement clinic and neuromuscular clinic.

Outpatient services:

  • botulinum toxin clinic - joint assessment with specialist nurse and consultant
  • chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) whilst awaiting Bursledon House (consultant referral only)
  • outpatient appointments for various neurological conditions both pre and post diagnosis (consultant referral only)

Bursledon House Therapy

The Bursledon House occupational and physiotherapy team work with the MDT to provide a homely and welcoming environment in order to support, care and manage children's physical, psychological, educational and social needs from birth to 16 years. We use a structured programme of care and treatment in a non medical setting.
