History
The first photograph using X-rays produced in Southampton was taken by Dr Norman Aldridge (1862-1933) in 1896, the same year as Wilhelm Roentgen's scientific paper describing their discovery. Dr Aldridge made this first image at his home in Cumberland Place, Southampton and the first hospital X-ray machine was installed at the Royal South Hants Hospital in 1901. Dr Aldridge was designated the 'Roentgen ray expert' in 1907 and a purpose built 'Electrical Department' was opened in 1911.
From these modest beginnings medical imaging in Southampton has expanded greatly incorporating new technologies such as Ultrasound, Computed Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Angiography and Digital Imaging.
